Steven's philosophy and background:
I believe that balance, strength and vitality are achieved through creative exercise and holistic mind-body education. Throughout my life I have been very active playing soccer, hiking, and studying martial arts. In college I discovered my true dedication to maintaining my own physical health and well-being.
I enjoy the dynamics of incorporating
holistic health coaching to harness true
potential.
I am inspired by people who are aware and appreciate the joy of living life to its fullest. Abraham Lincoln said it best, "It is not the years in your life that counts, but the life in your years."
The
C.H.E.K. Institute has helped me develop the tools to effectively educate people about sound principals of health and well being. I am certified through the C.H.E.K. Institute and continue my education daily.
I am a graduate of the Institute of
Structural Medicine a 2-year program
developing my skills as a practitioner of
structural integration.

Monica's philosophy and background:
My coaching is based on the realization that strength is developed from the inside out. My specialties include corrective exercise and core conditioning. I especially love working with women in pre-and postnatal core conditioning. By strengthening their core, they strengthen their ability to meet the daily demands of nurturing others as well as themselves. I practice yoga regularly and spent many years as a competitive ice skater.
I believe in positive re-enforcement and training people for life, not for the gym. A holistic approach to fitness keeps the body balanced, strong, and able to move freely. This is achieved through physical exercise in combination with stress management, nutrition and lifestyle counseling.
I am certified through National Academy of Sports Science and the C.H.E.K. Institute. I strongly believe in the philosophy of the C.H.E.K. Institute.
I am a graduate of a
2-year-training program at the
Institute of Structural
Medicine developing my skills as a
practitioner of structural integration.

"Studio 122 helped me get on the ball"
I originally hired Steven in an effort to reach my goal of climbing Mt. Rainier in celebration of my 40th year, and the changes have been floating to the surface, one by one, unexpectedly. About 3 months into the process of working with Studio 122, I woke up one day and it dawned on me that I hadn't awkwardly gotten out of bed,
protecting my lower back from bed stiffness and pain like I had done everyday for the last 8 years.
Somehow, in my effort to concentrate all my efforts on a 14,000-foot peak, Steven had wittingly "tricked" me into getting my body core muscles back into an active supportive role in my daily posture and movement. I elatedly shared this with him and he gently reminded me that all movements and energy stem from a stable and strong body core, or platform, and that my climbing ability and stamina would benefit.
I thought the benefits of my working out had been realized right then and there, but then, just a month or so later, summer started upon Seattle and I found myself on a beach out at the coast. My inner kid energy saw the waves, the sand, the dogs, the Frisbees, and without thinking, I sprang into action: I ran the length of the beach, finding a stride and my breath with hardly a thought. No small matter that I haven't ran in over 15 years due to multiple knee surgeries. Then it was off to all the other beach activities that I hadn't exuberantly partaken of for years. The big change? I had boundless amounts of energy. I haven't felt this young in years!!!!
In short, working out has become fun for me. I go and play for an hour a few times a week, with a trainer who's becoming more and more like a friend, and never was anything like the drill sergeant I thought he'd be. Instead, I go and get reconnected to my body. I get in touch with that youthful energy inside that never dissipates. I reunite with my desire to interact with the world around me. Thank you, Steven!

"I appreciate the encouragement and positive reinforcement that are a regular part of my personal training."
I started working out with Monica six months after the birth of my daughter. Over the past eighteen months, Monica has encouraged me to think about fitness and working out as more than a trip to the gym - I try to incorporate movement into all of my daily activities. Monica also understands that going to the gym on a daily basis isn't possible with my schedule and has developed several routines for me that I can do at home using stretching bands and a stability ball. Her mantra "food as fuel" helps me think about nourishment for my body, not just eating.

(Statements excerpted; complete letter available here).
"Ms. Donald is a gifted, dynamic, and inspired practitioner of wellness arts
She is rigorous in her pursuit of expanded levels of knowledge and credentialing in her field and has a bright future helping individuals develop and maintain healthy life skills…
Her work at "Studio 122" begins with private individualized assessments of clients using formal methods to evaluate posture, flexibility, and testing of functional core strength and balance. She is astute at recognizing physical imbalances and functional deficiencies. She designs individualized training programs with thoughtful consideration of clients basic exercise needs balanced with their own desires and goals….
Monica speaks of her work as "tutoring clients that their body is a tool they need to learn about" to optimize their "physical, psycho-social, and spiritual wellness". She emphasizes corrective exercise, postural balance, nutrition, musculo-skeletal strength and coordination, core conditioning, and mobility. She helps clients discover and utilize their mind/body connection for healthy strong living. She calls this, "Living Lively" and subtly helps clients amplify their individual strengths. She has a special interest in women's health issues, women's core conditioning, and is versed in sports specific training…
I have been singularly impressed with Monica's level of knowledge of anatomy, form and function, and her instinctive understanding of kinesiology. She has a natural gift, good hands, and a fine intelligence and curiosity for learning.
